Isabella Abbott is a multidisciplinary artist. Captivated by the sincerity of the subconscious and the emotive quality of colour, she seeks to represent elements of human nature and experience in her work. In 2021, she won both the purchase award and the sponsored website award for the international Collex Art competition 'BIG IDEAS / SMALL WORKS' exploring 'Freedom', 'Liberation' and 'Deliverance' in a series of lino prints. In the same year, she featured in an edition of The Horizon Magazine with her lino print 'The Pianist'. The metaphysical and philosophical ideas behind Abstraction and Expressionism, with a touch of the surreal, are influential in Abbott’s practice. Her artistic process involves exploring the interplay of line, colour, and unique mark-making. This blend fosters a dynamic energy, defining her artistic approach as she continues to pursue expressive and unrestrained creativity. She is currently exploring other mediums that expand on her artistic process, including metalwork, digital art, textiles and illustration. In 2024 she illustrated the comic children’s novel ‘Warning: This Book Contains Mild Peril’ by C. S. F. Abbott. Elements of her work are inspired by her rich mixed heritage; being English, Greek Cypriot, St Lucian and Malaysian. Subsequently, she has explored themes of mimicry and identity within an abstract cultural context, which has inspired her digital art and explorations with colour and pattern. Set design and cinematography are also influential in composing her works. Her artistic process is one that moves through multiple mediums in stages until the concept is finally developed in a complementary medium. This process is most notably documented in the body of work ‘Discernment’ which spans painting, textiles and instillation. The work that she is presently producing centres on allegorising the human experience and identity, captured through spatial and figurative integration. She recently graduated from Newcastle University (2021-2025) with a BA(Hons) in Fine Art and had priorly completed a Level 4 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at City and Guilds (2021).
